Principal's Message
Welcome to Stagg Elementary School! You
will find that we are a community of learners that always strives to
do our very best. We are proud to say that we have been named a Title
One High Achieving School for the sixth year in a row, with an API of
848.
Our teachers collaborate to bring all
of our students lessons tailored to their needs. We monitor our
students’ progress carefully, so that intervention is given early
and when needed. We also provide high level School for Advanced
Studies (SAS) and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
differentiation at Stagg Elementary.
The year, Stagg was a nominee for a
Music Center Bravo Award for our exciting music program. Every third
grade student receives weekly violin lessons from our orchestra
teacher. We have fourth grade beginning strings and band. By the time
our fifth graders get to the orchestra, they have had two years of
instrumental music experience, for the most part. Our Spring Concerts
highlight our band and orchestra, and our third graders have their
own day to shine in performance. Stagg is the only school in Los
Angeles Unified School District that is participating in the
Inspiring Notes music program. Inspiring Notes, funded by private
donors and grants, provides chamber concerts for all of our students,
and weekly semi-private professional music lessons for our band and
orchestra students.
We are also extremely fortunate this
year to be an Arts Prototype school, with District paid visual,
performing, and theater arts teachers coming into our school all year
long. Additionally, every other week, high school students from
Cleveland High School in the work experience teacher training program
come to teach art lessons to twenty-one of our classrooms, under the
direction of their wonderful teacher. The Stagg PTA sponsored a grand
event for the first time in many years—The PTA Reflections Arts
Program. One of our students is going on to further competition with
students at other schools later in the year! The arts program at
Stagg has become quite well-developed.
There are many opportunities for
parents to be involved at Stagg. We have a very active Parent Center,
with regular parent classes on Mondays beginning in March, ESL
classes on Fridays beginning in March, and Parent Council meetings
that are always open for anyone to attend. We also have weekly
Wednesday coffee gatherings all year long, where parents get together
and do crafts, talk, plan, meet with our Parent Representatives about
anything happening at our school. Once or twice a year, our
kindergarten teachers hold parent education workshops to help parents
understand how early reading and writing develop. Every weekend,
there is a phone call home from the principal updating parents about
the upcoming week. These phone calls happen either Friday or Sunday
night around 7:00 or 7:30.
As you can see, we have many exciting
things happening at Stagg Elementary. We all work together to make
sure that students are learning at a high level, and meeting the
standards of the State of California. And, as a community, we come
together for our children, to create a love of learning to last a
lifetime.
