STAGG STREET SCHOOL POLICIES

Mission The Stagg Street School community pledges to provide our children with a strong academic program and a safe, nurturing environment where all children can succeed.

Behavior Policy At Stagg Street School we emphasize the importance of developing self–discipline based on kindness and caring towards others. Therefore, students are expected to:

  • Follow directions of teachers and other staff members, who are responsible for student safety, in a kind and courteous manner.
  • Speak kindly to everyone at all times.
  • Speak softly at all times (No shouting or yelling)
  • Walk at all times in and around school except when playing in an approved playground activity.
  • Ask any teacher or other staff member for assistance if another student is causing a problem and will not stop when requested politely to do so. (Example-A child should say, “Please stop touching me.” Or “Please stop bothering me.”
  • WE DO NOT TREAT UNKINDNESS WITH UNKINDNESS

Students who have difficulty following our Kindness Policy will be asked to participate in a conference with their parents and teacher or their parents and the principal. Students will be asked to make up for any unkindness with a kind act, such as, a personal letter, a picture drawing, or other act of kindness. Parents/guardians, you can assist us by maintaining the same kindness policy outside of school. In addition, all children must know when to use courtesy phrases such as: “Please, Thank You, You’re welcome, and May I...” With this Kindness Policy kept in mind by students, teachers, other staff members and parents, we will help our children to become caring and respectful human beings. We are looking forward to an enjoyable school year of social, emotional, physical and academic growth for all students. Attendance and Absence When students are not in school, they are missing instruction. It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure that children attend school every day and On TIME. When returning from an absence, children are asked to bring a written note signed by parent stating the reason for absence. Children who are on crutches or have a cast or stitches need a doctor’s note before they can return to school.

Homework

Homework is important to students, not only to improve skills, develop and reinforce concepts, but to help children develop good study habits and responsibility. Homework is assigned every night Monday through Thursday for every child grades K-5.

Suggested Minimum Schedules:

Kindergarten 10-20 minutes per day
Grades 1-2 20-30 minutes per day
Grade 3 30-45 minutes per day
Grade 4 30-45 minutes per day
Grades 5 45-60 minutes per day

Reading may be assigned as a homework assignment. We encourage parents to make sure that their child has a library card and checks out books from the library and read with them regularly.

Report Cards

Stagg Street School has three reporting periods. The first and the second report cards are given out to parents at the parent –teacher conferences. The third report card is sent home on the last day of school. Unsatisfactory Performance Notices are sent home to those students who are not meeting grade level standards, mid way through a reporting period.

Parent Teacher Conferences, Back-to-School & Open House

Home/School communication is of utmost importance for the success of all students. Two parent conferences are scheduled each year; the first one in November, and the second one in March. Please refer to the school Calendar for the exact dates of conferences, as well as the dates of Back-to-School Night and Open House.

Student Records

The review of any or all pupil records will be during regular school hours and will be arranged at a time mutually convenient to the parent and the school official. If parents/guardians need copies of student records they are asked to notify the office 36 hours in advance. The school will charge a copy fee of .25 cents for the first page and .10 cents for each additional page requested.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up/ Parking/ Gates

All gates are open for morning drop-off. Our parent volunteers, trained by the Los Angeles Police Department, implement the school Safety Valet Program in the front of the school. Please be respectful of them and the traffic laws. All gates are locked at 8:00 AM with the morning bell and again at 3:00 PM after dismissal. Only one gate on OSTROM Street, in the faculty parking lot is open for pick-up after 3:00 PM. For the safety of the children, please do not double park or park illegally. Do not park on Stagg Street where there are signs for SCHOOL BUSES ONLY.

Release of Students

Children are not allowed to leave campus during school hours. It is strongly suggested that parents/guardians make important appointments after school. However, if a student needs to leave the school for any reason, the parent/guardian or an adult, designated in writing by the parent/guardian, must come in person to the office to be identified to sign the official release permit to pick up the student. Please send a note making the teacher aware that your child will be leaving early.

Emergency Information

Accurate and current emergency information should be on file with the school. Emergency cards are sent home with the opening packet. Parents/guardians are asked to complete the information required and update during the year if there are any changes in addresses and phone numbers both home and work. IT IS IMERATIVE that the school office has a telephone number to reach the parents/guardians at any time.

Safe School Plan

State Law requires that schools be adequately prepared to respond to earthquake, fires, and other emergencies. The school’s comprehensive “Safe School Plan” is accessible in the front school’s office and is available to all parents to review. Here is some important information that all parents/ guardians need to be aware of:
  • During an emergency when students are supposed to be out of their classrooms, the Assembly Area is the yard, the student line-up area.
  • The Assembly Area Team is responsible for the safe evacuation and accounting of all students.
  • During a “Lock-down” children may not be released from their classrooms, therefore, they may not be picked up until the school gets clearance from a Law Enforcement Agency.
  • Parents who come to pick up their children during an emergency should go to the Request Gate on Stagg Street, on the south-west corner of the school. Parents will be provided with ID tags authorizing them to unite with their children at the Reunion Gate.
  • The Reunion Gate, located on Ostrom Street, is where students are asked to identify the adults who come to claim them and require the adult to sign the student out of school.
  • If for any reason a decision is made that it is unsafe to remain on campus, the off-site evacuation for Stagg students is the Ralphs Supermarket parking lot at the corner of Louise and Saticoy Streets.
We want to assure our community that the school personnel are trained, and all have the responsibility of keeping your children safe during emergencies.

Safety

The safety of your children is of utmost importance to us. We ask parents to review these basic safety measures with children.
  1. If children walk to school, they need to follow the traffic laws. Remind children to come directly to school and go directly home after dismissal.
  2. Children are to wait for their parents or rides inside the school grounds and not on the sidewalks.
  3. Students may ride their bicycles to school and park and lock in the designated area. Parents/guardians should instruct children about bicycle safety rules including wearing a helmet, which is mandatory. The school resumes NO responsibility for damaged or stolen bicycles.
  4. Children may not be on the apparatus on the yard, unless otherwise supervised by a District employee.
Administration of Medication

Any student required to take medication during school hours needs to have a doctor’s prescription detailing the methods, amount, and time by which the medication is to be taken, as well as a written statement from the parent/guardian indicating the desire that the school personnel assist the student in administration of the medication. The required forms are available in the school office.

Students may not carry or use medication on campus without written consent.

Special Education

The booklet, The Parent’s Guide to Special Education Services, available to all parents in many languages, describes all the services the District offers to parents and students. Per District Policy, Stagg School has a process that brings together the parent/guardian and the school personnel to address any problems that interfere with a student’s success. If parents/guardians suspect that their children have special needs, they need to contact the children’s teachers or the administration to get information on how to get help.

Visitors on Campus

Parents/guardians are welcome to visit their child’s classroom at any time. However, all visitors, including parents, must check with the office each time to sign-in and receive a visitor’s pass. Children, including pre-schoolers, may not visit classrooms. Visitations are limited to 20 minutes during class time. Visitors may not interrupt the instruction by talking to the teacher or the students.

Volunteers

We welcome our parents/guardians and community members to volunteer in our school. All volunteers need to register with our parent center director, and per District policy, they need to have a T.B. test on file. All volunteers need to sign-in and out at the front desk in the office.

Lost and Found

We suggest that students’ names are written on all their personal belongings. Items without proper labeling are put in our Lost and Found area. Unclaimed items are donated to charity at the end of each quarter.

Personal Property

The LAUSD does not provide insurance for loss of or damage of personal property (including bicycles). Please do not allow children to bring valuables to school. No toys, games, CD Players, cameras, etc..

Per District policy, students are permitted to possess cell phones as long as they keep them on “OFF” and stored in backpacks. The cell phones are not to be used during school time including field trips. Children are permitted to use the school phones to call their parents/guardians if they have an emergency.

Textbooks

All textbooks are loaned to students during the school year. Parents/guardians are responsible for any damage or for lost books.

    Internet Access

The Los Angeles Unified School District provides access to the Internet and email through the District’s computer network (LAUSDnet). The District’s website is located at www.lausd.net. All uses of District computers and networks are regulated by LAUSD’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that can be found on the District’s website.
