School Information
The Entrance:
Stagg Street School, Pre-kindergarten to Fifth Grade, was built in 1953. There have been several on-going renovation projects to update and modernize the facilities. The school loo of “Stagg Street Stars” is beautifully painted on the auditorium wall and current information for parents is displayed on the school marquis.
The Playground:
The playground at Stagg has been redone through Proposition BB funds, and The Anne and Kirk Douglas Playground Grant. The new blacktop, the play equipment, the grassy area and the many trees provide a happy place for children to play comfortably and safely.
The Grassy Quad:
The grassy quad area, which is at the center of the school, is the place for many of our outdoor assemblies, as well as a central and safe area for after school activities. The math mural, wrapping around a classroom building, creates a beautiful background and gives a cozy feeling to this area. Stagg Street School has won First Prize or Grand Prize in the District One’s Annual School Beautification Project for three years in a row.
The Cafeteria
Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the school cafeteria. A cafeteria menu is sent home every month. Students may buy snacks during recess. We also offer the Second Chance Breakfast.” This is an opportunity for children who do not eat breakfast in the morning to eat during their nutrition break. This area is also adorned with a colorful mural depicting healthy eating choices.
The Auditorium:
Our newly retiled auditorium has been equipped with the state of the art projection system to be used for presentations, parent meetings, curriculum internet documentaries and video for students on inclement weather days.
The School Gardens:
The school has received the Gardens for Kids Grant which allows our students to plant flowers and vegetables and watch their growth for study during their science and health lessons. Besides the container gardens, all classrooms have adopted a planter/tree well an grow flowers enriching the school environment.
The Computer Lab:
Our computer lab assists teachers and the math and literacy coaches prepare appropriate lessons for all classes from Pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. Each class is able to use the lab for 45 minutes a week at a scheduled time. The lab has 25 computers, and through the generous donation of the school’s PTA, the lab has been equipped with a color laser printer so children can print their work in color. Besides the computer lab, every classroom has computers connected to the Internet so children can do research and access the vast information that is available on line.
The Library:
Through the Measure K funding, Stagg Street School’s library is currently in the process of being remodeled. When completed, the library will be double the size of the existing library. Mrs. Karen Morgenstern, School Librarian, works very closely with our teachers in making available the resource books for all the Open Court Literature Units. She also provides references to the art works of the Masters that connect to grade level instruction by theme. Due to the remodeling of the library, Mrs. Morgenstern is currently visiting classrooms to share her love of books and the arts.
